Fashion icon Vivienne Westwood has driven a tank to David Cameron's home village in a bizarre protest about the granting of fracking licences

• The Prime Minister was, however, in Leeds at the time of the protest
• Westwood branded the granting of fracking licences as 'undemocratic'

Fashion icon Vivienne Westwood has driven a tank to the Prime Minister's home village in a bizarre protest about the granting of fracking licences.

The controversial British designer was accompanied by fellow anti-fracking campaigners as she stormed through David Cameron's home village in the white tank.

Mr Cameron was, however, in Leeds today at the the time of the protest where he caused a storm of his own, 'joking' that people.

She has branded the Prime Minister's granting of licences in areas in Northern England and the Midlands as 'undemocratic.'

Westwood drove the tank from Texaco petrol station at Worths Motor Services, Oxfordshire, at 10am and arrived at Mr Cameron's constituency home in Dean, near Chipping Norton, at 11am.

Speaking in the Prime Minister's home village, she said: 'Cameron accuses foreign leaders such as President Gaddafi and President Assad of supposedly using chemicals on their own people as a justification for regime change.

'But he is doing precisely that here in Britain by forcing toxic, life-threatening fracking chemicals on his own people against the advice of his own chief scientist.

'It's time for regime change in Britain. Cameron plans to force householders to surrender their land and endure fracking underneath their homes. Britons no longer have any choice but to fight back.'

Last month the Government announced that it would award fracking licences to 27 locations.

According to Westwood, the Government has fired shots at its own people by undemocratically pushing through 27 Fracking licenses in areas in northern England and the Midlands

Fracking involves blasting sand, water and chemicals into shale rock.

This releases tiny bubbles of methane gas, which can be gathered at the surface.

Supporters of fracking say it creates a new unique gas source for the country. 

In America some fracking operations have caused pollution and minor earth tremors in the UK.  

The tank parked outside the Prime Minister's home before a group of protestors in gas masks led chants and held banners calling for the Government to change it's policy on the controversial plans.
